Sally’s Salad: It’s Delicious! You’ll thank us later…

This recipe was posted on Facebook by our 2013 100 Mile Endurance Challenge (100EC) winner, Tracy Thomas. Tracy named it “Sally’s Salad”, since it was given to her by her 100EC pacer, Sally Lachman. It is vegan, hearty, sweet, nutritious, and delicious, and we loved it so much, we had to share!! Sally’s Salad –Serves 3 as a main course (supposedly) or 4-6 as a side dish.  1.5 hours prep time. Black rice—which has a mellow, sweet taste—comes from several places in the world, including Thailand and Indonesia.  If you can’t find it, wild, brown or red rice would also work (cook according to package directions).   2/3 C. Black Rice (can be found at Whole Foods or other well-stocked grocery store) 1 lb. Butternut Squash ½ t. Sweet Smoked Spanish Paprika (can be found at Whole Foods or other well-stocked groc) ¼ t. Kosher Salt (I use unrefined sea salt) 3 T. Olive Oil, divided ½ C. Pecans, coarsely chopped 1 ½ T. Lemon Juice ½ T. Maple Syrup Pepper to taste 2 T. Green Onions, sliced ½ C. Pomegranate Seeds (sub dried cranberries or cherries) Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat.  Add the rice, adjust heat to maintain a lively simmer, and cook until rice is tender, about 30 mins.  Drain and rinse with cold water.  Set aside. Preheat oven to 375F°.  Peel and seed squash and cut into 1-inch cubes (I cut it into ½” cubes—it cooks easier and is easier to eat).  In a large bowl, toss squash with paprika, salt, and 1 T. oil.  Spread on a baking sheet in a single layer and roast, stirring occasionally, until browned and tender, about 40 mins.  Let cool.  Spread pecans on another baking sheet and toast until fragrant, stirring once, 6-8 […]

Horace May Accepts the Challenge

Sunshine or snow, students at Horace May Elementary School in Bemidji have one goal in mind: running 100 miles in a year. Horace May is participating in a national program called the 100-Mile-Club.  The program gets children to run or walk everyday until they reach 100 miles for the school year.  Horace May joined the 100-Mile Club to get students more active. This is the school’s first time participating.  Horace May expected 40 students to sign up, but instead got nearly 200 students in the program.  Teachers say students benefit from the morning exercise in and out of the classroom.  They see students more focused and enthusiastic about school work. Integrating Community, Exercise and ART!

The McNeil Elementary 100 Mile Club®, led by coaches Tara McDonald-Gomez and Marc Truelove, hosted a studio tour where students earned miles for visiting art studios in the McKinney Artist Studios Tour.  The entire McKinney, Texas community was invited to walk through seven (7)  unique studios, meet several artists, and/or to purchase art from local talent. Our little 100 Milers earned 1 mile toward their 100 mile goal by visiting each art studio with several blocks of off walking distance in between each studio. What an incredibly creative way to encourage our students and their families to see their community, get some exercise, and spend time together. …aaaand, Coach Truelove (pictured below in his very own studio) sold 15 paintings!!  :0) Story and photos submitted by Tara McDonald-Gomez via 100 Mile Club’s Facebook Page.  Share what YOUR school is doing by posting on our FB page, or emailing us at info at 100mileclub dot com.

100 Mile Club Schools Making it Happen in ALASKA!

[mls_h2]FITNESS CHALLENGE ENERGIZES SCHOOLS[/mls_h2] Written by Jillian Rogers, The Arctic Sounder, December 6, 2013 When Deering School principal Garrett McMullen got a grant to implement the 100 Mile Club program, he was faced with a unique challenge. Running or walking 100 miles in a school year, when most of it is cloaked in the cold and dark of Alaska winter, could be tricky. So he called officials at the national office and voiced his concern, offering a solution that they were thrilled to accept. Thanks to McMullen, students could run or walk, but snowshoeing and skiing would also be allowed as acceptable ways to garner miles toward the goal. By the end of the school year in May, each student will have completed 100 miles with the help of the $1,000 grant. Deering and Shungnak Schools were two out of 1,000 schools nationwide to receive the funds. For Deering, the money went toward new equipment, including a dozen pairs of snowshoes, T-shirts, certificates and decorations. The 100 Mile Club was the brainchild of California teacher Kara Lubin in 1992. For the first decade or so, the program was confined to Lubin’s classroom before branching out into the school, district, state and so on. These days the nonprofit has over 30,000 students at a couple hundred schools taking part in the challenge. Incentives along the way help motivate participants while helping them with life lessons in goal setting, determination and team building. Not to mention the many benefits of the exercise itself. Each Tuesday, Deering students congregate in the gym to rack up miles as a group. The themes vary and so far students have dressed up to fit “Hawaiian, Mexican, and western,” McMullen said. The students really look forward to charting their progress after the activity, McMullen added. Each classroom has […]

Run4Good earns huge milestone grant for PJUSD

Creekside Middle School students, parents, staff and community members logged more than 5,000 miles on Wednesday, Oct. 23 for the Run4Good October Challenge. In total, the school tallied 20,942 miles during the month of October. The school was already awarded a $5,000 grant through Saucony Run4Good Foundation. The grant mirrors Creekside’s100 Mile Club, where students were encouraged to log miles through their phone apps to receive an additional $5,000 grant. Local instructor and 100 Mile Club coordinator Janette Longcrier reported that Creekside is exceeding their current goals. “We more than qualified for the extra $5,000, thanks to all those that used the app in October,” said Longcrier. “We are excited to be able to continue the 100 Mile Club and allow students to join without having to pay the fee. We hope to continue inspiring those at Creekside and the community to have a healthier lifestyle.” Read more: Patterson Irrigator – Run4Good earns milestone grant for PJUSD

100 MILE CLUBS: GIVING BACK in a BIG Way!

Our schools sure know how to put their feet to good use!  So many of our schools are utilizing 100 Mile Club to RALLY their kids and families to give back and make a difference in their communities and beyond! Read below for some serious inspiration… Mark Twain Elementary. The Twain Bullfrogs 100 Mile Club & PTA held a Turkey Trot &  Canned Food Drive on Parent Conference Day for all families.  It was their first time combining the two events and it was a huge success! One little boy ran 6 miles in that hour.  WOW! What a great morning, Coach Magdaleno! John F. Kennedy Elementary.   Friday Night, November 1, 2013, JFK had their Heroes Run at Orange Terrace Park for Veterans. JFK & 100 Mile Club have so many amazing families in their organizations. They collected 87 cards/letters to take to the VA hospital and an overwhelming amount of food was donated by the 100 Mile Club families for the food bank. Coach Brenda White sends massive thanks to the families, the Air Force Volunteers who came out and cheered on our 104 walkers/runners and everyone who helped make this a great night. South Tamarind Elementary. South Tamarind Elementary, led by Rock Star Coach Lily Campos, held a triple-header! They had a Family Night at the school from 4-7:30 .  Every can donated was a ticket to win great prizes from community businesses, the kids got oodles and oodles of miles, and once the sun set, it was bundle up and cuddle in for movie time. The fire department even came out and ran with the kids and let them tour their big red truck! What a blast! If your 100 Mile Club is doing something fabulous to help YOUR community, please write and tell us.  Send pictures […]

DEERING SCHOOL: No whining, no complaining, no excuses.

Do YOU know where Deering, Alaska is?  In case you don’t, it’s right HERE (STILL don’t know?  Click below and a map will open up!): Deering is a city in the Northwest Arctic Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located on a sandy spit on the Seward Peninsula where the Inmachuk River flows into Kotzebue Sound, 92 km southwest of Kotzebue. The city covers an area of about 5 sq miles (13.73 km²)  Source: Wikipedia When we received a call that we would have a 100 Mile Club in Alaska, we jumped for joy! Coach McMullen had a CAN-DO attitude from the first phone call. Hi. Does snow-shoeing count? Teacher/Principal McMullen asked…Because we are way up here, close to the Arctic Circle. That was when we knew that Deering School HAD to become part of our family!  This is a NO EXCUSES school! They aren’t letting anything stand in their way. Yesterday, we received our first update from Deering School.  (Mind you, today the HIGH was 20°F (-7°C)!!) Here at Deering School just below the Arctic Circle the weather is starting to get a little chilly; however, that is not stopping us from completing our 100 mile goal.   Each week there is a different theme for participants to motivate them to complete their 100 miles.  This week it was “Cowboy Up Run” where all the students put on a mustache and a hat and took to the gym.   In the coming week we have “The Knight Challenge,” (Medieval Theme) “Hollywood Hills” (Movie Theme) “GOAL, GOAL, GOAL” (Soccer), “Hula” (Hawaiian),  just to name a few.   The 100 Mile Club participants enjoy the decorations, costumes, and music of the various themes.       Thank you Coach McMullen for keeping us posted and letting us know that 100 Mile […]
