A Year of School Fun Run Themes for 2020 | 100 Mile Club

The majority of miles in 100 Mile Club® will be completed at school during school hours. Before, during, and directly after school are the times when most miles will be accrued. Really, you can complete all of your miles at school and run quite a successful club. BUUUUUT, if you want to add some spice and shenanigans to your 100 Mile Club, why not try creating some themed Fun Run events in 2020? They are easy, low or no cost, and help bridge the gap between schools, families, and their communities, creating genuine and valued family and community engagement at your school and beyond. Adding a theme is fun, silly, and will add a lot of flair to your Fun Runs, Family Nights, or Run-Togethers. Always have music or a fun seasonal playlist going, take pictures, and celebrate MILEstones as they are achieved. Here are a few ideas to get your 2020 creative juices flowing: ❄️ January New Year, New YOU. 100 miles in her shoes

Walking challenge leads to strong bond for McKinney, Cohen Video Courtesy of KY3 / KSPR / Ozarks CW Springfield, MO 65807 Article by Martin Barrett, sports editor [email protected] Original publication, BolivarMONews.com   A twice-a-week walking challenge at Bolivar Intermediate School has led to a volunteer experience and a friendship for two Bolivar R-1 School District students, Bolivar High School junior Tracen McKinney and BIS student Rachel Cohen, who is blind. BIS hosts the 100 Mile Club on Tuesday and Thursday mornings when students at the school walk around the school’s track. The goal is to walk 100 miles before the end of the school year. McKinney said the idea to help out came from Coach Vicki Newcomb, who brought it up to the whole cross country team. The idea to help Cohen was something that McKinney wanted to do before he even heard she was blind. “She said that there was an amazing young girl at the intermediate school who wanted to join the 100 Mile Club,” McKinney said. “She then said that this girl needed somebody who would walk with her because she was blind. I was already interested in helping out before I was told about her being blind, but once I heard that she was blind, I knew that this was something I needed to do.” McKinney said he is visually impaired in one eye himself. Even though he said it does not affect him, he just knew helping Cohen was something he had to do. “It allows me to know what blindness is (like) in some respect,” McKinney said. “This really made my heart tug toward helping her because I knew that the small sacrifice I would make would mean a ton to her.” McKinney has helped Cohen by simply holding her hand during the walks and […]

Through Pedestrian Eyes | Inspired Words from Beginning to End

There’s something magical about 100 Mile Club…something that truly inspires. This story is about how a group of people from all walks of life and thousands of miles apart took their inspiration and ran with it! ___________________________________ The Inspired Poem. In late 2016, the 100 Mile Club Team spent a week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at a wonderful conference, working with new and existing 100 Mile Club schools. We had a phenomenal time and on the last day of the conference, we all jumped in our rental car and drove 80-something miles to New Orleans for the afternoon and evening. Walking down Frenchman Street, we stumbled upon a cool street poet named Zaq. Behind Zaq is a sign that reads: “GET A POEM ABOUT IT.” “I’ll write you a poem about anything you want.” he says above the noise of the night. Zaq’s voice catches the ear of BJ Walker, our Programs Manager here at 100 Mile Club. Immersed in the spirit of the night and inspired by the music in the air, she agrees to a poem but tells him… “I only have $5. I’m so sorry.” (Between the 3 of us, it is truly all we had.) “That’s ok. Whatever you have is perfect.” BJ tells Zaq all about why we are in Louisiana, the 100 Mile Club, and describes our mission, vision, and spirit. As she speaks, Zaq’s fingers inspiringly fly in a blur over his old, manual typewriter, keys tapping and snapping with sounds rarely heard in this age of touchscreen and voice memos. He pulls the little piece of hot pinky-purple paper from the typewriter and reads it aloud. We immediately fall in love…not only with the poem, but with Zaq, a talent beyond anything I could have imagined. We carefully carry the paper home, along with a […]

Hot Weather Hints and Tips: Keeping your cool when the weather isn’t.

The heat is on! Walking or running in the heat is possible and doesn’t have to leave you out of luck or stuck inside. Hot weather can often turn people away from letting their kids run outdoors, but with the proper preparation it can be done safely and enjoyably. Benefits of Running in Summer/Warm Weather Being active year-round is important and summer is a great time to be active (which is why we love our CLUB262 Summer Challenge!). Longer days make for extra time to get in that 60 minutes of recommended daily physical activity and extended daylight hours make running in the morning and evening much more enjoyable and feasible. Take the following hints and tips into account before attempting to run in hot weather conditions. Wait! Is it Ever Just Too Hot? Every school district has guidelines specific to their region and climate, so please refer to these when making decisions about heat related activities. The American College of Sports Medicine reports that the risk of developing heat-related illness while exercising is highest when the Wet Bulb Globe temperature exceeds 82F. The hottest part of the day is between 12-4pm and this time should be avoided on hot days. That said, one should check the air quality and the heat Index to make the best decision. Air Quality. Before heading out on your run, it’s a good idea to check the air quality index and the heat index. If the air quality index is code orange, and you’re sensitive to air pollution and/or have upper respiratory problems, you may not want to run. If it’s code red, it’s not suitable for anyone to run. Heat Index. The Heat Index tells you what the temperature feels like when combining the air temperature and the relative humidity. For example, if […]

Kaiser Permanente Riverside and 100 Mile Club Partner to Offer Monthly Meet Ups

RIVERSIDE, CA — January 15, 2016. The best prescription your physician can give you is to get moving and be more physically active as part of your daily routine. That is why on January 14th Kaiser Permanente Riverside and 100 Mile Club launched another sanctioned “meet up” on the hospital campus Thrive Path. Excitement was in the air and the weather was perfect at 5:30 P.M. when 50 students, parents, seniors, physicians, city and local school leaders were ready to begin walking the .5 mile loop. The Thrive Path meanders through the hospital grounds along the newly landscaped path with native drought tolerant plants and shrubs. Kara Lubin, Founder and CEO of the100 Mile Club stated “The partnership between Kaiser Permanente and 100 Mile Club continues to grow, and with that so does our ability to help more children and families get active and connect with their community.” Kaiser Permanente has been committed to caring for the community for more than 60 years. This launch is another example of how Kaiser Permanente seeks opportunities to collaborate to improve community health. The launch on Thursday brought students from Alvord, Corona-Norco, Jurupa, Menifee and Riverside Unified School District, including a local private school. Many stated they found this location to be a safe and convenient place to walk. Some students are well on their way to reaching the 100 mile goal, while one student just started the program and earned his first 2 miles on the Thrive Path. The Janet Goeske Senior Center supports their clients to be physically active and several who participate in the 100 Mile Club for adults joined that evening. A cheering crowd greeted one participant as she completed 250 miles (and counting.) The invitation to participate in these monthly 100 Mile Club meet ups is open to […]

Success Spotlight: Adams Elementary School

Guest post by Julie Churchman, Adams Head Coach and Resident Rockstar! Adams Elementary School in Santa Barbara, CA celebrated the end of another school year running in the 100 Mile Club®. Since September 1st through 6th graders have been keeping track of laps run before school, during recess, with their class, and in the RAP program. Participating in the 100 Mile Club gives the students the opportunity to walk, jog, skip or run around the school course and work towards 25,50,75, and 100 mile rewards. During this school year, 293 students surpassed their 25-mile goal earning a 100 Mile Club tee shirt. One hundred ten (110) students reached their 50-mile goal earning a gold pencil. Fifty students surpassed their 75-mile goal earning a 100mile club bracelet. And 11 students reached the 100-mile mark with 5 of those students running more than 150 miles and Christy Guerrero, a very determined 4th grader, running 206 miles! They were presented with their 100 Mile Club 2015 medals this morning at our morning school assembly. Third grade came in 2nd place logging 3515 miles and making it to DC and back to Oklahoma City. The fifth grade made it to our nation’s capital, but 3036 miles got them back to Memphis, Tennessee. Planning your own Race Across USA with your Students

If your school is not along the Race Across USA  route, there’s another way you can participate! If your class has 15-30+ students, they could also start “Running Across the USA” as a team leaving January 16, 2015 and plot their miles using our amazing overseas partner, WORLD WALKING. Race Across USA has also partnered with WorldWalking.org to reproduce the EXACT Race Across USA route. After your classroom covers 266 miles (about two weeks), your students will be rewarded with fun geography facts about the State of California. This will continue with every state all the way across the country. How cool is THAT!?! You might even beat the team to Washington DC! If you have questions or are interested in learning more about the Race Across USA,  please click here to message the amazing Race Directors, Sandy and Darren Van Soye from Run-Walk Events. Come on! You’re running anyway…might as well run across the country while you’re at it! WOOHOO!
